The Glenwood & Greenlawn Railroad Co.

Photo of the Month - March 2015

With seating for only ten passengers horsecar No. 3 slowly shuttled between the State of Ohio asylums west of Central Avenue to Broad and High Streets a distance of about 2 1/2 miles. The circa 1880 photo is from the Galen Gonser Collection.

This is a rare photograph of a Glenwood & Greenlawn Railroad Company horse car at the asylums end of the line. The G&G was a 3-foot 6-inch gauge line that ran on West Broad Street from Broad & High Streets to the two State of Ohio facilities located west of Central Avenue. There was also a branch of the G&G that turned south on Glenwood Avenue to Greenlawn Cemetery.

The G&G was built in 1872. In 1891 it was changed to wide gauge (5’2”), electrified and became part of the Columbus Street Railway Co.
