Buckeye Yard as built by Penn Central sat between the PRR-Little Miami line to the south and the PRR-Bradford line to the north. The yard is oriented in a north-south direction. Trabue Road crosses over the south end of the yard and Roberts Road crosses over the north end. Both are busy highways not friendly to the railfan photographer.
A train could enter Buckeye Yard from either the north or south. Typically it would enter the receiving yard located on the westside of the hump and bowl. A yard locomotive would pull the cars from the receiving yard and push them over the hump where they would coast into the “bowl”. A second yard locomotive would pull the strings of cars out of the bowl and push them into the departure yard located on the east side of the hump and bowl. From there the new train would be hooked up, inspected, powered, crewed, brake tested and finally depart the Yard.
David Reid photographed Buckeye Yard in the 1990s during the Conrail era. Most of the photos were taken from the bridges that carry highway traffic over the yard. The first set of Buckeye Yard photos were taken from the Trabue Road overpass which crossed the yard just south of the Hump.
