Columbus Streetcar Roster
Eight Wheel Streetcars - 1895-1905
The first double truck streetcars were purchased by the Columbus Railway & Light Co. in 1895 from the Barney & Smith Co. located in Dayton, Ohio. There were twenty 50 seat open cars equipped with Barney & Smith Double C trucks and General Electric Co. motors and controllers. All the cars in this list were two man cars requiring a motorman and conductor. The open cars had cross seats and the closed cars bench seats along the side of the car.
During this time period the Streetcar Company was enjoying great popularity with their public. They were continually adding cars to the roster in an effort to keep up with the demand.
253-272 - Double truck open cars built by Barney & Smith Co. in 1895. They seated 50 on cross seats. One car 271 was equipped with chair seats, 246 lights and named the "Electra". It was used for special events and excursions.
273 - Double truck closed car built by the Columbus Railway Co. in November 1895. It seated 40
274-282 - Single truck closed cars that will be included in the single truck roster.
283 - There is no record for this car number.
284-302 - Double truck closed cars built by the Columbus Railway Co. during 1896-1898. They seated 40.
303-312 - Double truck open cars built by Barney & Smith Co. in May and June 1898. They seated 60 on cross seats.
313-322 - Double truck closed cars built by J.G. Brill Co. during 1898. They seated 40 on center aisle bench seats.
323-325 - Double truck closed cars built by Columbus Railway Co. during 1900. They seated 52 on reversible center aisle seats. The trucks were later used on center cab work motors 065, 066 and 067.
326-335 - Double truck open cars built by the Barney & Smith Co. September, 1899. They seated 60 on cross seats.
336-355 - Double truck closed cars built by the Barney & Smith Co. during 1900. They seated 40.
356-370 - Double truck open cars built by the St. Louis Car Co. in 1901. They seated 60 on cross seats.
371-373 - Double truck closed cars built by the Columbus Railway Co. September, 1901 and June, 1902. They seated 60. 371 and 372 were made from two old four wheel cars. 373 was converted to wreck car 026 in 1911. All three cars may have been used on the Westerville line.
374 - Double truck freight motor later renumbered 015. Used on the Westerville line.
375-394 - Double truck closed cars built by J.G. Brill Co. during 1901 and 1902. 375 - 389 seated 40 on cross seats, 390-394 seated 36.
395-414 - Double truck open cars built by the St. Louis Car Co. February, 1902. They seated 60 on cross seats.
415-434 - Double truck closed cars built by J.G. Brill Co. in 1902 & 1903. They seated 40.
435-454 - Double truck open cars built by the St. Louis Car Co. in January 1903. In 1917, the cars were rebuilt as closed cars. In 1922, car 438 was rebuilt as line car 060.
455-494 - Double truck closed cars built by J.G. Brill Co. in 1903.
495-496 - Double truck four motor closed cars built by American Car Co. in 1903. These two cars were used on the Arlington Line.
